Great British Bake Off bets halted by Ladbrokes
Ladbrokes has stopped banking on BBC reveal the Great British Bake Off after a flurry of wagers stimulated fears the winner's name may have been leaked.
"A run of bets" was put for one candidate, numerous at shops in the Ipswich location, the bookie stated.
It is not known which baker prompted the flurry or whether any candidates have connections with the Suffolk town.
The very first episode of the popular amateur baking contest aired on BBC One Wednesday night.
It is the 6th series of the show, which challenges 12 hopefuls to impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.
Weekly the amateur bakers are expected to take on a baking challenge, with minimal guidelines, and present a "signature dish".
'Soggy bottom'
The bookmaker stated a flurry of bets came in for one of the 12 candidates whose odds started at 12/1 and were minimized to 6/1, 3/1 and then evens.
"We offered rates on Monday and, nearly before the yohaig code ink was dry, an unusual variety of punters were in a rush to back only one entrant," David Williams of Ladbrokes stated.
"On Tuesday and Wednesday it was more of the exact same one-way traffic. That sufficed to set our alarm bells calling and, as a preventative measure, we suspended our betting.
"Hopefully, we'll return up with modified odds sooner instead of later on, however we didn't wish to get caught with our pants pulled down and a soaked bottom, so we have actually decided to kick back till we are assured that Bake Off hasn't gone off already.
"When you see a run of bets like this for one contestant at the expenditure of everyone else that can be an indication to suspend betting for a bit to examine the situation," he added.
Several of the bets put were the optimum the bookmaker would consider wagers made on the show's result, and 90% were put on one contestant.
The suspension would not affect bets currently put, the yohaig code company stated.
The first entrant to be knocked out of the competition on Wednesday night was Stuart Henshall from Surrey.
The 11 staying contestants are from Berkshire, Lancashire, Cambridgeshire, London, West Yorkshire, Manchester, Essex, Swansea and 2 from Perthshire.
